The Devil’s Gate
***Updated Synopsis for Querying as of 06/26/2011
Jet Taley always thought that the most life altering day of his life would be the day he walked away from a car accident when his parents didn’t. He was wrong. That day came two years later when he was eleven and an early morning premonition of his own death preceded an earthquake that destroyed his hometown.
The morning of New Years Day arrived with a thick blue fog, preceding the destruction of Jet’s home town of Coquille, Oregon. As the disaster unfolds, so does his awareness of a hidden power that affects his vision and his movements. These abilities grant him an avenue to escape the wreckage that was his own home. His best friend, Samantha Downs [Sam], also survives, but only because Jet warns her mere moments before the disaster reaches her and her family. With his house and the entire city destroyed – Jet and his friends are forced to find new homes around the country.
Years later, Jet and Sam along with three other friends, collectively known as The Echoes, reunite on the campus of UC Santa Barbara in California, to begin their freshman year. Jayco Carter is The Echoes unofficial leader while Grantham Silver and Meia Mullins are all grade school friends with another chance at their friendship and maybe something more. The sole exception in their group of friends of attending their freshman year is Seyanna Motika, who traded in the school life for an arctic expedition with her parents.
Their freshman year was harder than expected. Now in their sophomore year, more than one surprise will hit them this year. Jet’s freshman girlfriend, Ariana Rios, the twin sister of his former roommate Raul, was dealt a difficult tragedy with her brother. He left school for a few months and Jet tried faithfully to make things work, but in the end, the pressure was too much and their relationship fell apart. His disintegrating relationship with Ariana will sink to an all new low his sophomore year. This is because Ariana and even her brother, back on campus, are hanging out with the last person Jet would ever want to see them with…Shane Fallon.
Shane was the first person Jet saw on campus last year. Everything has gone downhill since. Shane is charismatic and deceptive and it soon becomes evident he is the leader of a group that calls themselves The Dark Angels. Very little is known about them, they keep in the shadows and have their own agenda. The group members dress the same, are always seen in a pack, and are extremely secretive. But The Dark Angels aren’t the only group on campus and Jet and The Echoes suspect that Shane is the silent leader of them all.
Jet [Joshua Elbert Taley], named after his great uncle Joshua, grew up hating his name because of the many stories he heard about his uncle. First and foremost, he was killed by a town mob for being a sorcerer. Jet, of course, never truly believed this. He was always convinced that his uncle was a raving crazy who spent the majority of his life searching the hills of Coquille for lost treasure and failing miserably.
A few weeks into the semester, Jet receives a massive surprise. A large wooden crate, a package, was sent from his Nana, containing the most peculiar items. When he opens the crate he finds several ancient Egyptian artifacts, a cloak, a diary, jewelry, books and other items. He also finds a diary and a letter from Nana; this is where he learns about his true family heritage. Sam and the others are equally shocked at the items sent to him. These items have spent the greater part of the last three decades lost in a hidden storage unit. Jet is forced to reconsider his great uncle and why he was really killed those many years ago.
The diary describes a pre-Egyptian folklore, based more on reality than a fable. It elaborates on four rulers of the land Goth airtha; The Black Lion, The Owl, The Falcon and The Snake. Two rulers disagreed on how to use the powers of an ancient tablet, The Earth’s Divide. In the end, The Snake and The Falcon forged a partnership with the devilish prisoner, The Dark One, to use the Earth’s Divide to control the inhabitants of that world. The Black Lion and The Owl vowed to protect the tablet, at any cost. A fierce battle took place deep within a cavern. The Falcon and The Snake were defeated; this resulted in the fracturing of the tablet into twelve pieces. The Falcon and Snake were taken as slaves for The Dark One. The twelve broken pieces were placed into the Chest of Protection for storage. Before being banished, The Dark One created a last desperate way to escape. He cursed each piece with the power of destruction and ensured that he would be released after a series of dates, resulting in the power of the tablet being used to ignite a worldwide calamity. Whoever controls the tablets will have power to control The Dark One – for good or for worse. As protection, The Black Lion and The Owl willfully gave their lives to provide powers and instructions to the protectors of The Earth’s Divide.
Reality surfaces for Jet as a second natural disaster hits Washington DC and thousands of people are affected and killed. Several students from UC Santa Barbara are killed while on a trip to the capitol. The grim truth emerges that links the first disaster in Coquille, Oregon to this most recent disaster. Jet soon learns of the connection of the ancient tablet pieces of the Earth’s Divide and these disasters. Jet and his family were chosen as protectors of this tablet. His uncle was a Sorcerer and now so is he. A willful choice to follow Jet on his path is undertaken by Sam, Jayco, Grantham, Meia and even the newly arrived Seyanna. They agree to help track down the Chest of Protection as well as the first tablet piece.
With luck and determination, Jet and the others find the chest in a Swiss museum on display with other artifacts from Hitler’s own house, the Nazi regime, and the history of WWII. Jet is surprised to learn that Hitler himself was on the path to finding the Earth’s Divide. He sent a research team with hopes of procuring something that could turn the tide in his quest to control the earth.
After weeks of deliberation, the only conclusion is to steal the crate on display and replace it with a fake. Just when it looks like they’re going to succeed, members of The Dark Angels arrive at the museum with an evil plan of their own. Jet and the Echoes narrowly escape with the chest only to return to California with the burden of planning their next step.
Coquille, the site of the first disaster retains a secret; hidden within a small hill north of town is the first tablet piece. The cave entrance, hidden on a hill just outside of Coquille is their only way inside. Jet and Sam visited this exact cave entrance, on a hike, weeks before the first disaster struck. Now they must return with a myriad of help including several ancient items intended for battle. A truly important item, given to each of them, is a cloak that gives elemental powers from the earth. They can wield them according to their knowledge and skill. Another item, a golden pyramid, transforms into a prodigious ally.
As they approach the cave entrance, a hidden door transforms into a mythical creature. Jet is forced to fight the creature on his own while his friends watch helplessly. He barely survives but they must move forward through the depths of the cave. It becomes apparent that they are just minutes ahead of another group who is also seeking to control the tablet. The final room of the cave is where the answers lie to their nightmares, or where they are just beginning. Two sets of items, one set golden and the other black has been prepared and laid in this chamber. A timeless battle has been arranged and Jet stands in its path. They escape from the cave, with the tablet piece and their set of items just seconds ahead of their pursuers. Mysterious animals enter the fray as if called on from the depths of an inferno only to be met by their raptured counterparts. As the battle culminates, Jet and the Echoes barely escape with the tablet piece. It is then that Jet realizes that this is only the first of twelve important pieces of The Earth’s Divide tablet.
The Old Synopsis – Used in October of 2010 for Pikes Peak Writing Contest
The Earth’s Divide was an ancient tablet rumored to be a product of an old Egyptian fable. But what if it’s meaning and relevance could explain a series of natural disasters that were unfolding throughout the world? Jet Taley lived through the first of these devastating natural disasters.
The morning of New Years Day 2001, arrived with a thick blue fog preceding the destruction of Jet’s home town of Coquille, Oregon. As the disaster unfolded, so does the awareness of growing super abilities that affected his vision and his movements. These abilities granted Jet an avenue to escape the wreckage that was his own home.
The other members of The Echoes included: Sam Downs, Seyanna Motika, Jayco Carter, Grantham Silver, and Meia Mullins. Jet would realize, sooner than ever imagined, the importance of his friends and their role in the fight to control the tablet of The Earth’s Divide.
Years later, The Echoes reunited on the campus of UC Santa Barbara in California, to begin their freshman year’s classes. The sole exception was Seyanna, who traded in school life for an arctic expedition with her parents. However, her return during their sophomore year will be just as startling as it was important. Jet set out to repair much of the damage their friendships suffered over the past few years. Jet feared to share his abilities, along with the details of the destruction in Coquille, were just a few dilemmas affecting their friendship.
Jet’s freshman girlfriend, Ariana Rios, was the twin sister of his old roommate Raul. A tragedy struck Raul and he left school for several months. Jet tried to reconcile with Ariana, but in the end, the pressure was too much and their relationship fell apart. As his sophomore year began, Jet’s first encounter with Ariana started out almost perfect, but it soon left him angrier than ever. Just as things started to feel normal, the last person in the world that Jet would have wanted to see walked up, Shane Fallon.
Shane Fallon was the first person Jet saw on campus his first year. Everything had gone down hill from there. Shane was very charismatic and the leader of a group called The Dark Angels. This was a five member group and very little was known about them. As a group, they dressed the same, were always together, and were extremely secretive. The most intriguing aspect of this group was that they were the parent group of several other groups with similar names, members, and clothing.
Jet, named after his great-uncle Joshua, grew up hating his name because of many stories he was told about him. First and foremost, Jet’s uncle was killed by a mob for being a Sorcerer. Jet, of course, never truly believed this story. Second, Jet was convinced that his uncle was a raving crazy who spent the majority of his life searching the hills of Coquille for lost treasure.
Several days into the semester, Jet received a large wooden crate containing what he believed were items that had been forgotten at home. Instead, the crate contained several ancient Egyptian artifacts, a cloak, a diary, jewelry, books and other items. He also learned about his true family heritage through a letter from his Grandmother. These items were found in an unknown and forgotten storage unit tied to his family. Most of the items belonged to his Great Uncle, Joshua. Jet, who was initially shocked by what he found, soon learned their importance and a much deeper and troubling meaning of each item.
The diary described an Egyptian folklore, based more on reality, than a fable. Jet learned about four compatriots; The Black Lion, The Owl, The Falcon and The Snake, who became divided on how to use the powers of The Earth’s Divide tablet. In the end, The Snake and The Falcon forged a partnership with the devilish prisoner, The Dark One, to use the Earth’s Divide to control the inhabitants of the world. The Black Lion and The Owl vowed to protect the tablet, at any cost. A fierce battle unfolded deep within a cavern. The Falcon and The Snake were defeated. This resulted in the breaking of the tablet into several pieces. The Falcon and Snake were taken as slaves for The Dark One. The broken pieces of the tablet were placed into the Chest of Protection for storage. Before being banished, The Dark One created a way to escape using the tablet. He would be released after a series of dates, resulting in the power of each broken tablet being used to ignite a worldwide calamity. Whoever earned control of the tablet pieces, will control The Dark One. For protection, The Black Lion and The Owl willfully gave their lives to provide powers and instructions to the protectors of The Earth’s Divide.
Jet learned that his great-uncle was chosen as a protector and he was indeed a Sorcerer. It was the only way to provide protection of The Earth’s Divide. Jet choose to inherit this responsibility. The other members of the Echoes pledged to do all they could. With the knowledge of the series of disasters, they realized that the first date in the pattern of destruction occurred when their hometown of Coquille was destroyed.
Jet set out to find the history of The Earth’s Divide and any information that would help tracked down the Chest of Protection. To his horror he learned that Hitler himself became aware of the fable and the tablet. He sent a group of soldiers to track and locate the tablet, to use for his own world domination. He was successful in finding the tablet and separating the pieces throughout the world, but he didn’t know the timing of its destruction.
With luck and determination, Jet found the chest in a Swiss museum of artifacts from Hitler’s house and other WWII objects. Through weeks of preparation and planning, the only conclusion was to replace the crate, inside the museum, with a fake. Just when it looked like they are going to succeed, members of The Dark Angels arrived in Switzerland to do the same. Jet and the Echoes narrowly escaped with the chest but their work was far from over.
Jet and the Echoes must return to Coquille for the first time in almost ten years. One of the pieces of the tablet must be found and protected. The cave entrance, hidden on a hill just outside of Coquille, was the epicenter of the destruction. The Echoes will learn that it also holds The Earth’s Divide tablet piece. Along their way they encounter a mythical creature and almost succumb to the cave’s traps and the many disasters that lay within. They learned that they are just minutes ahead of another group intending to use the tablet with evil intentions. It was just a matter of time before they were found. The final room of the cave was one that Jet had already seen, at least in a vision. It contained the piece of the tablet and several other items and artifacts. Just as they are preparing to leave the cave, voices travel from the just outside. A battle ensued and Jet and the Echoes use their new-found abilities and powers from the tablet to escape. The dawning revelation was that this single piece of tablet is only one of eleven other pieces that must be found and protected to ensure that the Dark One does not escape.
